In August, all marina and boatyard facilities across Australia will be invited to participate in the 2025 Australian Health of the Marina Industry Survey. The survey is expected to take approximately 15–20 minutes to complete, provided respondents have their financial and statistical data readily available.
The project is once again sponsored by International Marina Consultants (IMC), a Silver Sponsor of the Marina Industries Association (MIA). The MIA acknowledges IMC’s continued support of this vital research initiative.
The survey will be conducted confidentially by Dr Ed Mahoney of the Recreational Marine Research Centre (RMRC) at Michigan State University. Its objective is to quantify the economic, employment, and social contributions of the marina sector within Australia. The resulting data plays a critical role for marine associations in advocating to government bodies, and for marina owners and operators when negotiating with local authorities on developments or preferential arrangements.
In addition to providing valuable sector-wide insights, the survey consolidates operational data to generate performance benchmarks. These benchmarks can support operational reviews, highlight opportunities for improvement, and assist in identifying areas for future development.
All information provided will remain confidential and will be securely held by Michigan State University. No individual facility data is shared with the MIA. Survey links will be sent directly from Michigan State University researchers to ensure data security and respondent anonymity. Only consolidated results and trend data will be shared. If participation levels are sufficient, results will be further segmented by state, marina type, and size to enhance the relevance and usability of the findings.
Facilities that complete the survey will receive a complimentary copy of the full consolidated report. Those that do not participate may purchase the report through the MIA website at a cost of $2,500 for members or $4,500 for non-members (excluding GST).
Infographics showcasing sample data from past surveys are available on the MIA website, offering a snapshot of key highlights and a preview of the insights available in the full report.
The survey email will be distributed on Tuesday, 5 August, with the subject line “2025 Aus Marina Survey” and sent from noreply@qemailserver.com. To ensure it is received, recipients are encouraged to whitelist the sender’s email address in advance.
