MIA Secures Its Future with Strategic Office Purchase

In a move that signals long-term vision and a strong commitment to its members, the Marina Industries Association (MIA) has announced a significant milestone in its history, purchasing its own office premises for the first time.

For over 20 years, the MIA operated out of leased offices, initially sharing space with the Boating Industry Association at its Crows Nest building until its sale in 2022. Later that same year, the Association relocated to rented offices in North Sydney. Throughout this period, successive MIA Boards demonstrated prudent financial stewardship, carefully managing operations and setting aside modest surpluses. These were conservatively invested with a clear and consistent goal: to one day secure a permanent home for the Association.

That vision has now been realised. In an announcement made this week, the MIA confirmed it had finalised the purchase of its own office space, marking a transformative moment in the Association’s journey.

This strategic acquisition not only provides the MIA with a permanent base but also significantly reduces its ongoing occupancy costs, by an impressive 57% annually. More than just a cost-saving measure, the investment represents a strengthening of the Association’s operational foundations, enhancing its capacity to serve and support its members well into the future.

The MIA Board of Directors was determined that the new office should be located near a major marine hub, to ensure proximity to the businesses and professionals it represents. This would also allow the MIA to attract and retain the experienced talent necessary to drive its work forward.

After carefully evaluating multiple locations across Queensland, including the Gold Coast, Brisbane and various New South Wales precincts such as North Sydney and the Northern Beaches, the Board selected Mona Vale as the ideal location. Situated just 28 kilometres north of the Sydney CBD, Mona Vale offers unparalleled access to one of New South Wales’ most significant marine precincts, Pittwater. With more than a dozen marinas and a thriving ecosystem of marine businesses nearby, the area is perfectly aligned with the MIA’s mission.

Transport connections were another key consideration. The new office is close to the Mona Vale bus depot, which offers efficient services across the Northern Beaches and direct express links to the CBD. Additionally, the site is conveniently located near Kuring-gai National Park, the Hawkesbury, Central Coast, and Lake Macquarie, providing quick access to vital marine regions north of Sydney.

Settlement is scheduled for 22 August, with the MIA team planning to relocate the following week.

This forward-thinking decision reflects the MIA’s unwavering commitment to securing a strong future for the marina industry. It is a testament to the strategic foresight of the current and past Boards, and it ensures the Association is well-placed to protect the interests of its members while continuing to promote their prosperity.

The MIA have extended its gratitude to members and stakeholders for their ongoing support and said they look forward to welcoming them to its new home in Mona Vale. This is a new chapter in its service to the industry.
