New Sydney Fish Market

Statement from Transport for NSW

As you may be aware, the new Sydney Fish Market will open on Monday 19 January 2026.

When the new Fish Market opens, there will be no water access available. Maritime facilities, including berthing for visiting boats and a ferry service are expected be operational within 8-9 months of this opening date and we will advise you on progress on these additional facilities as they develop.

Even without the berthing facilities and ferry services, however, we are expecting some extra maritime activity from December onwards (including commercial fishing vessels) and wanted to let you know how we’ll manage the extra traffic in the area.

Boating Safety Officers will be on-water in the area from mid-late December to help manage marine traffic. The map below shows suggested pathways and speed restrictions for the various areas.

Fishing vessels associated with Fish Market businesses (which will berth on the Southern end of the Fish Market complex from late December) will be typically departing at night and returning very early morning (before sunrise).

It will be important for all vessels to be extra careful when entering, traversing and leaving the area and to obey speed signs as indicated on the map. The area around Blackwattle and Rozelle Bays is also a no wash zone.

Of special importance will be the need to carefully watch out for rowers, as this activity is very prevalent in this area.

Likewise rowers, particularly those who are out in early morning and evening hours, will need to be lit appropriately and, be aware of the likelihood of other vessels around them.

Once the public berthing facilities and the ferry service starts, the area will become even busier, so all maritime users of the bay should start practicing navigating extra traffic as soon as possible.
