Queensland Government removes more than 150 wrecks from the Mackay region

The Queensland Government has removed a number of derelict vessels from the Pioneer River in Mackay, bringing the total to more than 150 vessels cleared from local waterways under the Keeping Our Waterways Safe initiative.

This milestone means all highly visible derelict vessels in the area have now been removed.

The former fishing vessel Amastra was the last vessel removed on 6 May, marking further progress in cleaning up the riverbank and restoring the area for the local community.

Removing derelict vessels is a complex operation that requires careful planning, specialist contractors, and close coordination to ensure the work is carried out safely and without causing environmental harm.

The Maritime Safety Queensland-led operation was supported by Mackay Regional Council, who engaged a contractor to remove debris and rubbish left behind by previous vessels and illegal camping activity. This collaborative effort has delivered a cleaner and safer area for the community to enjoy.

The Queensland Government remains committed to ensuring Queensland waterways are safe, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone.
