Preparing for whale season

As humpback whales begin their annual migration along the NSW coast, agencies and partners are working together to prepare for entanglement incidents and help protect these iconic animals.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service delivered Large Whale Disentanglement Training in Coffs Harbour to build the specialist skills needed to safely assess and respond to high-risk whale entanglements. The nationally accredited course combined classroom learning with on-water exercises to strengthen teamwork and readiness.

This was the first joint training delivered by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development since signing a formal Memorandum of Understanding. It strengthens the state’s ability to respond quickly and safely when whales are in trouble.

The course brought together 12 participants, including 7 NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service staff and 5 NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development staff, alongside partners including Gumbaynggirr Rangers, Marine Rescue NSW and ORRCA.

Each year, about 40,000 humpback whales migrate along the NSW coastline. Some become entangled in ropes, nets and other marine debris. In 2025, 29 entanglements were recorded. When a whale becomes entangled, a fast and coordinated response can improve its chance of survival.

Over the past 2 years, 96 staff have completed accredited training, supporting trained whale rescue teams along the NSW coast. By strengthening partnerships and maintaining a skilled response network, agencies and partners are better prepared to protect whales during migration season and beyond.

If you see a distressed or entangled whale, keep your distance and contact NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service on 1300 072 757 or ORRCA on 02 9415 3333. For more information, visit www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/wild-about-whales.

This project, Partnerships to protect marine wildlife is funded by the NSW Government under the Marine Estate Management Strategy.
