NTI launches new Commercial Boat Cover to support smaller operators

Australia’s largest transport and logistics specialist insurance provider, NTI, has expanded its Marine offering with the launch of Commercial Boat cover – a simpler, plain-language policy designed to better support smaller commercial vessel operators.

The new cover responds to growing demand for more accessible marine insurance and designed to support a broad cross-section of Australia’s maritime sector, including tourism operators, workboats, and community vessels such as those used by schools and clubs.

While NTI’s existing Commercial Hull offering remains a critical solution for larger or more complex risks, it is typically structured around Institute Clauses – standardised provisions that sometimes require detailed interpretation to fully understand coverage.

NTI National Hull Product Manager John James said that while Institute Clauses continue to play an important role in the market, they may not always be the most practical fit for every customer.

“To understand what’s covered under an Institute Clause policy, you need a reasonable knowledge of how those clauses work and how they’re applied,” Mr James said.

“For smaller operations, that level of complexity isn’t always necessary. Simple risks can usually use a simple solution to give them the cover they need.”

Developed in response to this gap, Commercial Boat uses plain language and a simplified structure to make it easier for brokers and customers to understand their insurance in practice.

NTI Head of Marine Portfolio Daniel Morrison said the product had been deliberately designed to strike the right balance between simplicity and strength of cover.

“This is a product we’ve spent a lot of time thinking through,” Mr Morrison said.

“Our team recognised the need for something easier to navigate, without losing the reliability and protection NTI is known for. Commercial Boat is the result of that work.”

The policy is built around accidental damage, providing protection for a wide range of common incidents such as collision, grounding, fire, theft and submersion.

“There are thousands of smaller commercial vessels operating across Australia, supporting local industries and communities,” Mr Morrison said.

“This product allows us to better support that segment of the market with a solution that reflects their everyday needs.”

Commercial Boat cover is intended for commercial use only and is not designed for private or recreational vessels. Read more here.
