BIA-supported advocacy delivers maritime training funding boost

The BIA has welcomed a significant workforce development outcome for Queensland’s maritime sector, following the successful approval of traineeship funding for three key maritime qualifications.

The funding approval follows a submission led by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC), supported by industry data and stakeholder feedback provided by BIA and marine industry operators across the state.

As a result, the following qualifications have been added to the Queensland Subsidised Training List and included in the current training provider contracting round:

  • Certificate II in Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 Near Coastal (MAR20424)
  • Certificate IV in Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 Near Coastal (MAR40224)
  • Certificate IV in Master <45 Near Coastal (MAR40324)

This outcome represents a practical step forward in addressing the workforce and skills shortages consistently identified by maritime employers. Access to subsidised training will help remove barriers to entry, support career progression pathways, and strengthen the pipeline of qualified crew and marine professionals across Queensland.

The funding approval is particularly important for regional operators and businesses experiencing ongoing challenges in attracting and retaining skilled maritime personnel. By improving access to nationally recognised qualifications, industry can better support both new entrants and existing workers seeking to advance their careers.

BIA has worked closely with industry stakeholders to provide workforce data and employer feedback that demonstrated the need for greater investment in maritime training. This successful outcome highlights the value of a coordinated industry approach to advocacy and the importance of industry-led solutions to workforce challenges.

While this announcement marks a positive milestone, advocacy efforts continue. Two Diploma-level maritime qualifications included in the original submission remain under assessment, with QTIC and industry partners continuing to advocate for their inclusion in future funding arrangements.

BIA thanks QTIC for its leadership on this issue and acknowledges the marine businesses and operators who contributed valuable workforce insights to support the submission.

Together, we are building stronger pathways into maritime careers and helping ensure the industry has the skilled workforce needed to support future growth.
