Cath Beaufort OAM has become the first female Commodore of the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria (RYCV), marking a milestone in the Williamstown club’s history spanning more than 170 years.

Appointed at the club’s Annual General Meeting on 19 September, Beaufort became the first woman to hold its highest elected position since its establishment in 1853.
A club member for more than 30 years, Beaufort brings extensive experience within the RYCV community, having most recently served as Vice Commodore. Outside sailing, she works as an operations manager in radiation oncology at Alfred Health.
“It is an incredible honour to be appointed Commodore of the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria,” Beaufort said.
She expressed pride in helping shape the club’s next chapter and a desire to work alongside members, volunteers and staff as it continues to evolve.
Beaufort’s appointment last month comes as RYCV enters its 174th sailing season, with priorities including sailing, training, membership and participation, alongside its role as a welcoming waterfront destination.
General Manager Richard Black described the appointment as an important moment, reflecting the diversity of the membership and the club’s commitment to its future while respecting its traditions.
Founded as the Port Phillip Yacht Club in May 1853, RYCV now has more than 1,000 members. Its activities range from junior Tackers programs and introductory sailing courses to competitive keelboat and dinghy sailing.
The club also continues to invest in its marina, hardstand and waterfront infrastructure, supporting its sailing activities and connection with the Williamstown and Hobsons Bay community.
