Boating Industry Warns of Major Economic Hit Following WA’s New Demersal Fishing Ban

The Boating Industry Association of Western Australia (BIAWA) has expressed concern over the State Government’s newly announced demersal fishing reforms, warning that the extended closures will have significant economic and social consequences for recreational boating businesses, marine retailers and tackle shops across Western Australia.

BIAWA CEO Sheryl Swarbrick said the industry supports sustainable fish stock management, but the Government has overlooked the substantial financial impact this decision will have on small businesses and the wider marine sector.

“We recognise the importance of protecting WA’s fish stocks, but this decision has been made with insufficient regard for the thousands of businesses and jobs that depend on recreational fishing activity,”

“The boating and tackle industries are facing an immediate downturn. Many of our members expect severe reductions in sales, service bookings, customer traffic and staffing hours. Some businesses may not survive this extended closure period.”

Industry Impact Expected to Be Severe

BIAWA members include boat dealers, marine retailers, repair and service centres, chandlers, tackle shops and allied marine businesses; early feedback from members indicates:

  • A projected decline in boat sales, particularly fishing vessels
  • Reduced demand for servicing, repairs and accessories
  • A downturn in customer traffic to stores and chandlers
  • Increased cancellations, reduced enquiries and declining revenue forecasts.

“This decision will directly affect recreational boating behaviour,” Ms Swarbrick said. “When people can’t fish, they often don’t buy or upgrade boats, and they don’t visit tackle shops. The flow-on effects are immediate and substantial.”

Government Support Package Unlikely to Offset Losses

BIAWA says the support package details are unclear and the measures appear insufficient.

“We urgently need clarity on how support will reach frontline businesses, and whether these measures will meaningfully offset the economic damage that is already unfolding,”

Balancing Sustainability and Industry Survival

BIAWA emphasises that protecting WA’s fish stocks and maintaining a strong recreational boating industry are not mutually exclusive goals.

“We support sustainable fisheries management, but sustainability must include economic sustainability for the communities and small businesses that rely on these fisheries. Our industry deserves a viable future.”
