A joint multi-agency maritime capability exercise has concluded in Sydney.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW), supported by Australian Border Force (ABF), participated in Exercise Noxium II from 25-27 May.

As part of the National Plan for Maritime Environmental Emergencies, the exercise provided an opportunity to test and strengthen Australia’s ability to respond to incidents involving hazardous and noxious substances onboard a vessel at sea in a real environment.
Specialist personnel practised safely boarding technical teams to a vessel to locate, test and identify a simulated chemical spill, and in doing so, assess associated risks and determine appropriate response measures.

Insights from the exercise will strengthen national preparedness in response to vessel-based chemical incidents, helping protect Australia’s precious marine environments.
The exercise is part of a regular national training and exercise program ensuring agencies maintain operational readiness, interoperability, and a coordinated approach to managing complex maritime hazardous noxious incidents.

AMSA acknowledges FRNSW and ABF for their ongoing collaboration and commitment to maintaining a strong, coordinated joint multi-agency capability to respond to maritime hazardous and noxious substance incidents.
