Australia’s largest Hybrid Electric Vessel

CSL Group and Adbri are celebrating the delivery of MV Yampu a 11,000 DWT, battery-powered, self-unloading bulk carrier. Initially it is designed to operate 25% electric with 6.7 MWh of batteries from AYK, but they plan to deliver new charging infrastructure and upgrade batteries by 2031 to allow it to operate 100% on battery-electric. The high efficiency design was built in compliance with Lloyd’s Register requirements and has the largest battery systems of any hybrid electric vessel operating in Australia.

MERC Member International Maritime Services (IMS) is providing ship delivery and crew management to CSL Group for Yampu through her maiden voyage from China until she arrives and commences operations in Australia. IMS is a Perth-based niche maritime solutions provider, specialising in vessel delivery, crew management, and operational support, serving clients across Australia and around the world.

IMS CEO, Brendan Cooley, said “It’s a real privilege to be involved in delivering a vessel like Yampu. Safe and timely delivery of a world-first vessel relies on the crew, and ours have done a great job.”

MERC Member Cavotec has provided the shore power and charging infrastructure for Adbri using their PowerReach fixed job crane power cable management system. There is a radio remote operated from the vessel, allowing it to be easily deployed whether berthing at an urban wharf like that at Birkenhead in Pirt Adelaide, or a remote one like Klein Point, South Australia;

“This order demonstrates both the strong confidence that customers have in our shore power technology and our ability to support On Shore – Shore Power infrastructure projects in the APEC region”, says Ian Birchall – Cavotec Regional Sales Director. “This is a new shore power – charging system to this customer and we are excited to be part of the next phase whilst supporting the electrification of the Yampu development.”

With short-sea routes like the one CSL maintains in South Australia, electrification offers viable options even for large ships like the MV Yampu. MERC celebrates CSL’s commitment to decarbonising their operations!
