Members of the VMR Brisbane Rescue Squadron voted to join Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ) at a special general meeting of their squadron last week, with more than 90% of members voting in favour of the resolution.
The unit’s name will change to MRQ Sandgate when they join MRQ, due to the service’s history of naming units according to their location. But while their name may be different, rescue services will still be managed by the same friendly faces and experienced crews.
The name change also links the unit back to its origins in the early 1900’s, when the Sandgate Yacht Club needed a rescue organisation to keep their sailing members safe.
VMR Brisbane is expected to join MRQ in September.
