Transport for NSW Maritime is running their Expired Marine Flare Collection Program from 9 to 25 January 2026 at key boating locations across NSW.

This program provides boaters with a safe, simple, and free way to dispose of expired or unwanted marine flares, helping protect our waterways and the environment.
What Boaters Need to Know
- Check the expiry dates on your flares. Marine flares typically have a shelf life of three years and must be replaced before their expiry date.
- Bring expired flares to a designated collection site. Note: they strongly recommend checking the schedule on their website prior to attending any collection event to confirm that the time and location have not changed.
- Flares cannot be wet or damaged when handing them in at collection points
- Never dispose of expired flares in household rubbish or public bins and only ignite them in a genuine emergency.
- For large quantities exceeding 10 kilograms or special cases, consult SafeWork NSW or a licensed explosives professional to determine the safest and lawful handling, transport and disposal approach.
Disposing of flares properly reduces the risk of accidental discharge and ensures hazardous items are handled safely.
