My biggest news from the past month is the fact that I attended an invitation-only Carp Summit in Victoria at the end of April. I went along expecting yet another largely empty “talkfest”, with little in the way of positive outcomes. I came away pleasantly (if cautiously) surprised.

Some of the participants at the recent Carp Summit enjoyed a tour of Victoria’s very impressive Arcadia Native Fish Hatchery.
The underlying mood of the conference was one of impatience, and a strong desire to finally get something done about carp. This shift is being driven to a very large extent by Victorian Fisheries, who’ve cast themselves as by far the most proactive fish management authority in the country right now. Good on them. They deserve the accolades they’re getting.

Carp densities in many parts of the country are horrifying — up to a tonne per hectare in some places!
The full breakdown is in the video I made about the event — watch it below. If you have any interest in the carp issue (and you should!), I’d strongly urge you to do so. There’s also a matching podcast if you prefer to listen.
Until next time, Tight Lines.
