Tasmanian ocean data company Tidetech has been recognised as an employer of choice by the Tasmanian government, one of a select group of organisations acknowledged this year.

Penny Haire (CEO) and Dr. Christelle Auguste (Senior Oceanographer)
The Employer of Choice program recognises Tasmanian organisations, of any size, that foster positive and productive workplace cultures. Recognised employers show a commitment to staff wellbeing, inclusive practices, work-life balance and best-practice workplace policies.
Tidetech CEO Penny Haire said the recognition reflected a culture the company had built deliberately over its eighteen-year history.
“Our work depends on continuity,” Ms Haire said. “It’s scientifically and technically complex, and it takes people who understand it deeply, trust each other and see projects through.
“Most of our team has been with us for between two and nine years and that stability shows up directly in what we deliver, including the current build of our third-generation data platform, which has moved faster and more consistently since we became more deliberate about flexibility and communication.”
That deliberate approach includes a hybrid working model, with staff typically in the office three days a week and at home the other two, six-monthly strategy days where staff help shape business priorities directly, fortnightly team lunches, and annual recorded catch-ups introduced to give every staff member a structured space to talk through workload, wellbeing and development.
For senior oceanographer Christelle Auguste, it’s about people and purpose.
“What drew me to this organisation was the combination of a close-knit team and a shared set of values,” Dr. Auguste said. “I contribute by developing high-resolution ocean models and leading projects that translate complex science into practical applications, supporting innovation and decision-making across coastal and port environments. The organisation supports my professional growth by keeping me engaged with emerging technologies, while also supporting my wellbeing through a healthy work-life balance.”
Tidetech specialises in high-resolution tidal and metocean modelling, producing operational ocean data used by hydrographic offices, ports and maritime OEMs and software providers around the world. Behind that work is a small, highly specialised team of scientists, technologists, and mariners.
