There will soon be a new marine gateway for those wanting to explore the coral filled waters off Cape Keraudren Coastal Reserve – part of the Eighty Mile Beach Marine Park in the East Pilbara.
Planning has commenced for the replacement of the only boat ramp in the area to provide a safer launching facility for boat owners wanting to experience the unspoiled waters surrounding the rocky cape.
Led by the Shire of East Pilbara, the project will see the construction of a brand-new ramp with a safer alignment to face the predominant wave conditions, surfaced with reinforced concrete panels and connected via a new access ramp. The project also includes modifications to the road layout.
Use of the existing ramp is significantly restricted because it is not accessible at low tide and exposed to waves at high tide with potential for vessels to be swamped or rolled by the strong currents and adverse sea conditions.
Construction of the new ramp will be undertaken outside of the wet season and it’s anticipated it will take approximately two years to complete with planning and approvals granted prior to construction commencing.
In the State Government’s Outdoor Adventure Tourism package, a feature of the recent State Budget, $1 million was allocated to the project after the Shire agreed to fund the remaining cost. Detailed planning will determine the total cost of the project.
Minister Assisting the Transport Minister David Michael said “This is a worthy project for funding from the State Government’s Outdoor Adventure Tourism package which saw $165 million invested in new and upgraded boating facilities, campgrounds, trails and tourist attractions across WA in the State Budget, making it easier to enjoy the State’s great outdoors.
“The replacement and realignment of the boat ramp at Cape Keraudren will address safety issues and improve the user experience, helping to attract visitors to this beautiful part of our northern coastline.
“It will also help preserve the unspoiled coastline by reducing informal launching that can sometimes be damaging to the local environment.”
