The winners of the 2025 Gustave Trouvé Awards for Excellence in Electric Boats and Boating (The Gussies), have been announced. Now in their sixth year, the world’s only international awards dedicated exclusively to electric boats, continue to highlight the most innovative electric vessels across the globe, celebrating design, engineering achievement, and the rapid evolution of clean marine propulsion.
This year’s awards drew 5,000+ public votes from around the world and the expert judgement of a 35-member international panel, combining into a weighted voting system that determines the final results. From 42 finalists, 12 winners were selected across 10 categories, reflecting the accelerating growth, diversity, and sophistication of the electric boating sector.
Notably, two new countries join the Gussies “Atlas of Winners” for the first time: Türkiye and Bulgaria, with Bulgaria earning two winners in 2025. Two categories resulted in a tie, with the top entries separated by less than 1% of combined votes, and in one case, by a single vote.

Retrofitted and Customized Electric Boats
Winner: 1928 Herreshoff Launch – Nova Luxe Yachts, USA
This launch was originally built in 1928 to at the end of Nathanial Herreshoff’s storied carreer to accompany ‘Enterprise’ for the 1930 America’s Cup. Originally designed for a steam engine, later fitted with a 12 hp gasoline motor, Nova Luxe Yachts was contracted for the electric refit. A 4kw WaterWorld inboard motor and a single 6.8kwh battery was installed, the 12v battery replaced with a step-down transformer. The Aesthetic of the boat was extremely important and the new age display was hidden behind mahogany and the throttle was modified to match original aesthetics.

Electric Workboats

Hailed as the ‘Tug of the Future’, the ground-breaking electric-powered ElectRA Series of harbour tugs is the first of a new generation of emissions-free tugboats from Sanmar Shipyards that will have a major impact on cutting emissions in any busy harbour they work in. ElectRA tugs, available in a range of sizes (19-28m) and power outputs (40-85 TBP), are the result of Sanmar’s ongoing collaboration with Robert Allan Ltd and Corvus Energy to build low and no-emission tugs utilising alternative fuels and innovative technological advances to protect the environment and build a sustainable tug and towing industry.

Commercial Passenger Vessels In Operation
Winner: Candela P-12 – Candela, Sweden
The Candela P-12 Shuttle serves the world’s 1st electric hydrofoil ferry route, in Stockholm, Sweden. Consuming 80% less energy than a non-foiling vessel, it has a range of 40 nautical miles with a 25 knot cruising speed and can recharge its battery in under an hour using a standard DC fast charger. Because it creates almost zero wake it does not have to slow down in no-wake zones and completes its commuter run in less than half the time. Combining low operating costs with a minimal environmental impact—it is better for the planet, passengers, and operator profitability.

Commercial Passenger Vessels In Development
Winner: AT1 EVM200 – EV Maritime, New Zealand
AT1 is the first of two 200 passenger, fully electric, carbon fibre composite EVM200’s for Auckland Transport. AT1 was launched in June 2025, reaching 30.4knots in sea trials. It is intended to be a hard-working member of a busy fleet, seeking to bring decarbonised operations to commuter ferry routes at transit speeds of up to 25-knots with a range beyond 20 nautical miles on a single charge. It is designed to fast charge at the dock while loading and unloading passengers, with capacity to accept 2 x MCS plugs for a combined charge rate of up to 2,200kW.

From high-performance record-setting race boats to solar-powered cruisers and zero-emission ferries, the 2025 winners demonstrate just how rapidly electric propulsion is advancing, and how widely it is being adopted.
Jeff Butler, founder of The Gussies and editor of Plugboats, commented: “The category for boats over eight meters perfectly illustrates the remarkable breadth of electric propulsion today. One of the winners is a state-of-the-art performance boat that set the speed record at the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge; the other is a quiet, solar-powered overnighter built for relaxed coastal cruising. That contrast shows how far the industry has come, and how many different directions it’s now growing.”
