Australian Sailing’s Annual General Meeting will be held in late October and the nomination period for elected directors has been opened.
There are three director positions being vacated at the 2025 AGM. Members are entitled to nominate people to be elected to these positions. This number includes Richard Hudson and President Shevaun Bruland, who are both understood to be seeking nomination and re-election. The other is the vacancy created by Mal Page OAM OLY’s resignation as a director upon being appointed as CEO of Australian Sailing.
Nominations for election will be handled in accordance with the constitution. In constituencies where clubs affiliate with Australian Sailing directly, it is the affiliated club which is a Member of Australian Sailing and eligible to nominate the candidate. In states and territories where the Member Yachting Association is the affiliated Member of Australian Sailing, nominations can only be made by the MYA.
- In New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory clubs affiliate directly with Australian Sailing, and they are the Members eligible to nominate candidates for election.
- Yachting VIC, Yachting QLD, Yachting WA and Yachting NT are the Members eligible to nominate candidates for election from their regions.
In either case, the nominee should work with their club and Regional Advisory Committee or MYA as applicable.
Regard should also be given to Australian Sailing’s needs when considering nominees for election.
The Australian Sailing Board is a skills-based board. Because of this, the Nominations Committee will evaluate nominees in consideration of the skills mix needed on the board and to deliver the strategic plan, maintain geographic and gender diversity requirements.
On reviewing the geographic and gender diversity gaps, the Nominations Committee has identified that Australian Sailing is seeking nominees of either gender to maintain a 4/5 split, with a strong preference for people from Queensland, New South Wales or Victoria.
There is a requirement for an excellent understanding of the sport and strong recognition and support from the constituency, and elevated core skills of governance, leadership, strategy and engagement. This year the skills being sought in nominees for election this year are in order of priority:
- Sailing’s High Performance program
- Government and Brisbane 32 Organising Committee access and influence
- Digital and Marketing
CEO has written to Members who are eligible to nominate candidates for election to do so. A link has been provided in that invitation to the form to make nominations, and that form will guide the nominator through the information which is required. Nominations for election to the Board must be received by 25 September 2025.
In the event of a vote, a Member is eligible to vote where there are no outstanding affiliation fees. The number of votes that any Member’s Delegate has, is allocated in accordance with the number of members of the Clubs in the State represented by the Delegate, who have been registered on the Australian Sailing database by their Club or the Voting Member as at the date of the election.
