This year, World Boating Day will be held on Saturday, 23 May, with activities also taking place across the official week from 18–24 May. Now in its third year, the international campaign continues to build momentum, encouraging marine businesses around the world to engage new audiences and showcase the many opportunities boating can offer.

The 2026 theme, #WhatFloatsYourBoat, is designed to spark conversation, invite participation and highlight the personal connections people have with life on the water. Whether that means a first boating experience, a marina visit, a behind-the-scenes tour, a hands-on demonstration or simply a conversation about careers in the industry, the message is clear: boating should feel accessible, welcoming and relevant to a broader audience.

Luke McCaul – Australian Ambassador for World Boating Day
Leading the Australian effort is Luke McCaul, the Official Australian Ambassador for World Boating Day, who is calling on industry businesses to get behind the initiative and use it as a practical opportunity to grow boating.
“For those who are not aware, I am the official Australian Ambassador for World Boating Day, and with that, I’m excited to say we are officially one month out from World Boating Day 2026 on Saturday, 23 May,” McCaul said.
“Now in its third year, World Boating Day is gaining real traction globally, and at its heart is a huge opportunity for all of us in the marine industry.
“This isn’t just another event, it’s about growing boating.”
McCaul said the campaign gives marine businesses a chance to start new conversations with people who may not yet see boating as something they can access, understand or participate in.
“World Boating Day is a global invitation for marine businesses to open their doors and start new conversations with new people,” he said.
“Last year saw hundreds of events worldwide, all focused on one thing: bringing fresh audiences into boating and showcasing what our industry truly offers.”
That focus on new audiences is particularly important at a time when the industry is looking beyond traditional channels to expand its reach. For McCaul, the value of World Boating Day lies in its ability to help businesses think differently about how they tell their story and how they connect with future boaters, owners and marine professionals.
“If we want a strong, sustainable boating industry, we have to keep expanding the top of the funnel,” he said.
“That means looking beyond our traditional marketing channels and our ‘known’ customers, and reaching the untapped market.”
He said businesses can take part in ways that suit their size, location and customer base. Around the world, activations have included open days, marina tours, boat walkthroughs, careers conversations, simple introduction-to-boating experiences and family-friendly events.
“It doesn’t have to be complex, it just has to invite people in,” McCaul said.
The timing of World Boating Day also presents a natural opportunity for businesses exhibiting at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show.
With 23 May falling during SCIBS, exhibitors have a ready-made platform to activate their stands, engage newcomers and promote the boating lifestyle to people experiencing the show for the first time.

McCaul believes the alignment creates a powerful chance for the Australian industry to present boating as both aspirational and approachable.
“As Australia’s Ambassador for World Boating Day, my role is to help make this simple, practical and valuable for your business,” he said.
“I’m always happy to talk through ideas or help you shape an activation that fits what you do best.
“This is our chance to grow boating together, not just for today, but for the future of the industry.”
Businesses interested in participating can register their event and access planning resources through the official World Boating Day website. For the marine sector, it is a reminder that growing the market starts with opening the door.
