The Boating Industry Association of Victoria (BIAV) is the Voice of the Marine Industry. Whilst supporting and representing direct members, the BIAV also supports the state’s 200,000 registered boat owners and 430,000 marine licence holders. BIAV focus areas include boat show delivery, government related advocacy, boating promotion, member servicing, education/industry development, and governance.

In terms of supporting industry and members, the area of education/industry development is of utmost importance.

To that end, BIAV seeks to appoint a Manager – Education and Industry Skills. This will be a senior and integral role, reporting to the CEO, working with a dedicated committee, and liaising with members and other educational stakeholders.

About the Role:

The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron is located on beautiful Manly Harbour, overlooking Moreton Bay with a 597 berth marina, 200 bay hardstand, 15 bay boat yard and is recognised as one of the largest marine facilities in Australia. We are looking to expand our Marina Team and need an experienced Dockmaster who will assist and report to our Marina & Maintenance Manager.

This is a full-time role and will include working at least one day on a weekend which is our busiest times, and be flexible at other times if needed for emergencies on weekends and public holidays. The Dockmaster will be responsible for ensuring the marina is maintained in excellent condition at all times and high standard of customer service is delivered to our marina occupants and visitors at all times.

In this role, your key responsibilities (not limited to):

  • Assist with all aspects of the Squadron’s marina, hardstand and storage facilities, marina occupancy, and compliance with current regulations and marina by-laws
  • Assist in reviewing and implementing maintenance schedules to keep on-water facilities in optimum condition
  • Conduct daily dock-walks to identify any maintenance or security issues, communicate with berth occupants, assist with visitor berthing as and when required
  • Coordination of external contract tradespersons to carry out work or obtain quotes; Identify and make recommendations on repairs and maintenance of fixed and mobile assets and structures

This role will be ideally suited to someone who has worked in a marina environment and looking for a new and bigger challenge. Experience in facility maintenance as well as having strong and encouraging leadership qualities, with a hands-on approach will be highly considered. Your ability to focus on member engagement, have personable communication skills and a desire to make a difference, will be a great asset in this role. Attention to detail will be one of your key strengths and you will be competent in the use of Outlook, Word and Excel or have the desire to learn new systems, such as data entry Asset Management and Marina Focus.

Preferred Skills, knowledge and background:

  • Experience in a similar role in a marina or boating environment
  • A trade skill in either carpentry or general maintenance would be an advantage

Your duties will include:

  • Performing preventative maintenance and servicing on engines and generators
  • Servicing and repair of engines, gearboxes and components, computer diagnostics
  • Daily/weekly checks on all systems including cycle systems and machinery

Description

This is a technical coaching role based in Sydney, NSW, which is focused on the ‘new’ classes (those new to the Olympic program in 2024). The role will have a development focus in the iQFOiL, Kitefoil and their associated pathway classes, with an ability to at times work to develop coaching knowledge and application in the other classes. While this role is based in Sydney and NSW, there will be a reasonable amount of interstate travel required in building the delivery of new classes nationally.

The successful candidate will work with categorised NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) athletes in daily training, camps, and regatta environments. The role will also monitor and support the identification, confirmation, and progression of youth talent, towards the performance pathway in NSW.

The NSW Assistant Coach will be supported as part of our Performance Pathway coach group, aligned to Australian Sailing’s ‘Next Level Coach Development’ framework and supported with access to world class coach development opportunities. Executing an agreed professional development plan will be an important part of progressing in this coaching role.

Principle Accountabilities

In alignment with the NSW State Sailing Pathway Program (SSPP) objectives and strategy, primary responsibilities of the NSW Assistant Coach include:

  • Provide on-water coaching support for NSWIS SSPP athletes in the local training environment, scheduled training camps and at major state and national regattas.
  • Drive and monitor the development of NSW youth pathway classes, via talent ID and direct coaching at association/AS youth events.
  • Create and action robust training, regatta, and review plans (to be agreed with NSW Program Lead).
  • Work closely with the Australian Sailing national coordinator and Australian Sailing Team coaches of the and Windfoil and Kite classes to support planning and integration.
  • Work with relevant Performance Pathway staff to produce and action an agreed individual development plan (IDP)
  • Demonstrate high levels of collaboration, being respectful when liaising with all stakeholders to assist in the effective delivery of program.
  • Undertake administrative responsibilities, including regular progress reports and operational/logistics meetings with Australian Sailing, NSWIS or performance pathways staff in the timelines required.
  • Manage any contract coaches for use in required classes, as agreed with the NSW Program Lead.
  • Undertake required planning and logistics for the team at camps and events as required.
  • Maintain all supplied equipment including an allocated coach boat and trailer for your own use and remain accountable for its servicing.
  • Notify NSW Program Lead and Performance Pathway Coordinator of damage to program assets that require repair.

  • Relevant Coaching Accreditation
  • First Aid Certificate
  • Working with Children / Working with Vulnerable People Check
  • Drivers Licence
  • COVID-19 Certificate or proof of vaccination status or a medical clearance as per the Public Health Order

Desirable Criteria

  • Relevant Tertiary Qualification
  • Australian Sailing Coach Qualification
  • NSW Boat Licence
