Back in 2001, Sydney continued to bask in the glory of the hugely successful Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics. The sailing world was abuzz after Ludde Ingvall’s IRM Maxi made history as the first Swedish-owned yacht to claim overall victory in the 2000 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. John Howard served as the country’s Prime Minister, while Premier Bob Carr led NSW.
That year, 26-year-old Justine Kirkjian achieved a personal goal to land a job in the CYCA’s Sailing Office. Sailing had long formed part of her life, with years spent at the Club with family and friends. Few could have predicted what lay ahead.

Over a quarter of a century, Kirkjian has remained a steady force for positive change and growth at the CYCA.

She won Australian Sailing’s Sports Professional of the Year in 2015 and 2021, in acknowledgement of her tireless work to promote the sport of sailing.

After 25 years with the CYCA, Kirkjian has lost none of her enthusiasm for the job.

“Twenty-five years ago, I walked into the CYCA for the first time as an employee. The Club had always been part of my family’s life, but I couldn’t have imagined the journey ahead.
Every day I meet incredible people, and the staff are like family. I’m still here and still loving it.”
